Prerequisites of Death Certificate Attestation

Probably one of the agonising ironies of life is death, which culminates all biological functions of a living organism.  And issuance of death certificate affirms the authenticity of the fact mentioning the time, place and reason of death. At times, it is also observed that people visit a foreign country and then any serious health issue, accident or any other reasons cost their lives for good, which is pretty ill-fated! Under such circumstances, certain legal procedures are to be practiced in the visiting nation, which further authorises the reasons and other essential information pertaining to the deceased person. This entire process of legalisation is known as Attestation of Death Certificate.

Different countries have their distinguished processes of attestation. In India, the process contains three simple steps wherein; the death certificate first gets authenticated from the respective Home Department; second, the certificate is processed for MEA, and lastly, the document gets attested from the respective Embassy. While applying for the attestation of a death certificate, the applicant (family member of the deceased person) needs to provide some essential documents to the competent authority. Some of these documents may include Form of Death certificate attestation, a copy of the death certificate, valid document from the mortuary mentioning the fact that the dead body has been preserved properly in a casket. Besides, a document from the crematorium is also required to be accompanied to take the attestation process further. As per Hindu tradition, cremated ashes of a deceased person are kept inside a vase. In such case, the certificate should clearly mention that the urn contains nothing other than the cremated ashes of the deceased person.

Getting a death certificate attested also helps in recovering the benefits of concerned person. In many Gulf countries, there are various legal units that provide an attestation letter in place of attestation certificate. Such documents also suffice the purpose of authenticating the genuineness of the document as well as the seal and signature of the department who have attested the same. In foreign countries this type of confirmation is an obligatory practice to avoid any impediments in future.
